In a surprising twist in the Spanish league, Athletic Bilbao missed a crucial chance to cement their position in the standings, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Valencia.

This 21st matchday clash, a part of a competition currently led by the unexpectedly strong Girona, saw Bilbao unable to capitalize on an opportunity to break away into third place. Valencia’s Hugo Duro made the difference with his 61st-minute goal, propelling his team to a provisional seventh place. Thierry Correia, the Portuguese defender, played a role as a substitute for Valencia in this pivotal match.

Meanwhile, the league landscape continues to be dynamic and competitive. Real Sociedad, holding onto third place, shares points with fourth-placed Barcelona. However, Barcelona, the reigning champions, have played two fewer matches, with a significant game upcoming against Betis. Barça's squad, featuring Portuguese internationals João Cancelo and João Félix, finds itself seven points adrift of second-placed Real Madrid, who are set to face the bottom-placed Almería on Sunday.

Girona, leading the league in a sensational run, holds a slender one-point lead over Real Madrid. They have played more matches than their closest title rivals and are preparing to host Sevilla, the team just above the relegation zone.

In other action, Real Sociedad solidified their sixth-place standing with a 1-0 victory over Celta de Vigo, thanks to an early strike from Brais Méndez. Notably, Portuguese international André Silva was an unused substitute for the visitors in this encounter.

Portuguese talent continued to shine in La Liga, with Gonçalo Guedes, on loan to Villarreal from Wolverhampton, making his debut in a 1-1 draw against Mallorca. Guedes, who spent the first half of the season at Benfica, entered the fray at a crucial juncture, replacing Ilias Akhomach in the 70th minute. The match saw a late equalizer from Mallorca at the 90+1 minute, cancelling out Alexander Sorloth's earlier goal for Villarreal.

Lastly, Las Palmas made strides up the table, ascending to eighth position following a convincing 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. Goals from Alberto Moleiro and Javier Munoz were instrumental in securing this victory, marking a significant moment for the team in their league campaign.
