On Sunday afternoon, Borussia Dortmund was unable to continue its winning streak in the Bundesliga. However, they managed to prevent their first league loss of the season on their visit to Eintracht Frankfurt through a remarkable display of resilience, which had to be demonstrated twice: 3-3.
Dortmund had been in excellent form in recent weeks, with five consecutive league victories and a remarkable midweek Champions League win over Newcastle United. Donyell Malen was chosen as the Man of the Match in England, much to the surprise of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. In Frankfurt, the Dutchman once again had a starting spot, just like Kobel.
After 25 minutes, Dortmund found themselves trailing 2-0. Omar Marmoush scored twice for Frankfurt: first, he converted a penalty awarded after a handball by Marius Wolf, and then the striker scored from a rebound. It wasn't until shortly before half-time that Dortmund pulled one back when Marcel Sabitzer fired in the connection goal, assisted by Niclas Füllkrug.
Malen didn't return for the second half. The forward was replaced by Youssoufa Moukoko, who, within ten minutes of his entrance, scored the equalizer, making it 2-2. Frankfurt's defense appealed for offside against Füllkrug, who was in the path of the shot, but Moukoko's first Bundesliga goal since April 8 was allowed.
The comeback was thus completed, but Dortmund had to start all over again shortly. Julian Brandt had an unfortunate entrance: shortly after his substitution, the midfielder lost the ball, after which Fares Chaibi was sent through by Ellyes Skhiri and scored the 3-2. However, Brandt made up for his mistake eight minutes before the end by scoring the equalizer.
Dortmund wanted more after that but didn't get it. With the draw in Frankfurt, Edin Terzic's team now has two points less than league leader Bayern Munich. Bayer Leverkusen can take the top position from Bayern if they win against SC Freiburg later this Sunday (17:30).
