In total, Bournemouth was under Gary O'Neil's management for 37 matches last season. He took over as interim coach from Scott Parker at the end of August. The forty-year-old coach performed significantly better than his predecessor and was officially appointed as head coach in November.

O'Neil secured Bournemouth's safety with four matches remaining but is still being let go. He had a contract until mid-2024.

"Gary's performance last season is one that I will always be grateful for," AFC Bournemouth owner and chairman Bill Foley said through the club's channels. "This has been a difficult decision, but we have thought long and hard to position ourselves as best as possible for the upcoming season. Gary will have a long career as a head coach or manager, but we believe that a change is in the best interest of this football club at this time."

Foley indicates that Bournemouth has a busy summer ahead. "There are a number of significant upgrades planned for the stadium and training facilities. We have also set some important goals in the transfer market this summer, and we believe that these changes will provide us with the best foundation."
