Jan Paul van Hecke is making an impression in England. The defender from Zeeland is becoming increasingly important for Brighton & Hove Albion and has received some fine compliments from his manager Roberto De Zerbi for his performances.
De Zerbi and Van Hecke joined the press on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League clash with Ajax. The 23-year-old Dutchman shared how much he has learned from playing under De Zerbi. The Italian, in turn, had his own fine words for Van Hecke, who is likely to start in Brighton's fourth European game in the club's history against Ajax.
De Zerbi didn't have to search for words to describe Van Hecke. "Great player!" the Italian stated succinctly, before elaborating a bit more: "Jan Paul has been a surprise for me and my staff. His development is incredible. He deserves to be a starter. I hope he can play the same in Amsterdam as he does in England."
De Zerbi did not find it appropriate to take credit for the growth Van Hecke has made in England. "His development is not my merit, you know. I can explain what I want, what the best solution is for the players. But if you don't have smart players, and good players, it's impossible for coaches to make them better," the Italian success coach assured.
