PSV has secured Champions League winter survival for the sixth time in club history in Sevilla. The gap to Ajax in this respect is now minimal.
PSV came back from a 2-0 deficit on Wednesday night in Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, securing a memorable qualification for the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament. The team led by Peter Bosz is now part of the elite group of the sixteen best teams in Europe. PSV last reached this far in the Champions League in the 2015/16 season.
This marks PSV's sixth winter survival in the Champions League. Among Dutch clubs, Ajax still leads in this respect, having overwintered seven times. Ajax last made it past the group stage in the 2021/22 season.
Winter survival in the Champions League remains a significant achievement for Dutch clubs. No Dutch team has progressed beyond the group stage in more than half of their participations. PSV's highlight in Champions League history was reaching the semi-finals in the 2004/05 season, where they narrowly lost to AC Milan. In the 1992/93 season, PSV overwintered without having to survive a group stage, as the tournament began with a knockout phase back then.
