Robert Sánchez is the new goalkeeper of Chelsea. The 25-year-old Spaniard has been acquired by The Blues from Brighton & Hove Albion and will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the starting position at Stamford Bridge.
Sánchez is the replacement for Édouard Mendy at Chelsea. After the 31-year-old Senegalese goalkeeper's departure to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, the twelfth-placed team in the Premier League had to search for a new goalkeeper. They opted for Sánchez, for whom a reported transfer fee of nearly 28 million euros is being paid.
Like Kepa, Sánchez is a Spanish international. Brighton picked him up from Levante back in 2013. Sánchez has become one of the most reliable goalkeepers at the highest level in England, but under manager Roberto De Zerbi in the second half of last season, he lost his starting position at Brighton.
This was reportedly due to his ball-playing abilities. Earlier in this transfer window, Brighton already signed Bart Verbruggen for twenty million euros as a new goalkeeper. The twenty-year-old Dutchman came from Anderlecht.
