Chelsea has reconsidered and surprisingly comes up with a plan for Ian Maatsen

Chelsea is planning to extend Ian Maatsen's contract, as revealed by transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano. The London club accepted an offer from Burnley for the 21-year-old defender on the last day of the transfer window, but Maatsen himself wasn't interested in moving to Turf Moor. Maatsen had already played on loan for the Clarets last season.

Maatsen turned down a move to Burnley; he wanted to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place at the club. Now, Chelsea wants Maatsen to sign a new contract," Romano reveals via his YouTube channel. "The talks regarding a new contract will be crucial for Maatsen. If they don't materialize, Maatsen will have to look elsewhere for his opportunity, perhaps in January or maybe in the summer.

"But for Chelsea, it's crucial to get Ian Maatsen's new contract sorted," the transfer market expert continues. "It's part of their plans, and this is something they really wanted to clarify with the player. So, Maatsen stays; he rejected Burnley, but Chelsea wants to have a new contract signed as soon as possible."

The current contract of the left-back, who was recently called up to the Dutch national team for the first time, expires next summer. Besides Burnley, Ajax, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham United have also been linked with the defender this summer. He came through the youth academies of Sparta Rotterdam, Feyenoord, and PSV before making the switch to Chelsea's Under 18 team in the summer of 2018, with Chelsea paying €110,000 to PSV for his transfer.
