Roméo Lavia will be playing for Chelsea in the upcoming seasons. The London club officially announced the transfer of the Belgian midfielder on Friday morning. The nineteen-year-old Lavia is being acquired from Southampton, and Chelsea is reportedly paying over sixty million euros for the transfer.
With this transfer, Chelsea once again outpaces rival Liverpool. The Reds were also interested in Lavia, but they missed out. The same thing happened this week with Moisés Caicedo, who, despite Liverpool's interest, made the move from Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge for a record fee.
Chelsea's summer expenditures are approaching four hundred million euros after this transfer. The London-based team is once again splurging money, as they spent over six hundred million euros on new players last season.
Lavia emerged from Anderlecht's youth academy and was later picked up by Manchester City. However, he made his breakthrough at Southampton, where he appeared in 29 Premier League matches last season. Since this year, Lavia is also an international player for Belgium, participating in the friendly match against Germany (3-2 victory). The defensive midfielder signs a seven-year contract in London.
