Marino Pusic is leaving Feyenoord. The Dutch champions made this announcement themselves on Tuesday afternoon. Arne Slot's assistant coach is leaving the Netherlands to take up the position of head coach at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Pusic, who has previously had experience as a head coach at FC Twente, thanks the Dutch champions for their cooperative attitude. "I am very grateful to Feyenoord for facilitating this step. Although I was still really enjoying my time in Rotterdam, the head coaching position at Shakhtar Donetsk is a unique opportunity for me in every respect. It has therefore been a difficult decision. I thank Feyenoord for their support in this process,” reads a statement on Feyenoord's website.

In turn, Dennis te Kloese, the general director of the club, thanks Pusic for his services. “This was a very exceptional situation, as you would prefer not to see a key assistant leave in the middle of the season. That we have cooperated with his transfer is a sign of respect towards Pusic as a person, trainer, and coach. Moreover, Shakhtar has shown in all respects that they really wanted him, and we have reached an agreement with them regarding his transfer.”

Pusic flew to Spain on Monday night, as Feyenoord coach Arne Slot revealed on Tuesday. Shakhtar is playing there on Wednesday night in the Champions League. It is not yet clear whether Pusic will take his place on the bench at Camp Nou immediately. In their own league, Shakhtar is currently in third place, two points behind the leader, who has played one more game.
