For De Jong, things went wrong 63 days ago in the home match against Celta de Vigo, and since then, he has been sidelined with an ankle injury.

As a result, the midfielder also missed the climax of the Euro qualification period, during which the Dutch national team secured its place in next year's European championship.

At Barça, De Jong missed three group stage matches in the Champions League and the lost Clásico against Real Madrid. 'We have suffered from his absence, he is a very important player,' said coach Xavi before the match against Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona currently stands third in La Liga, with a two-point deficit behind rival Real Madrid and four points behind the surprising leader Girona. Rayo Vallecano is in tenth place in Spain.
