De Ligt will miss the Nations League finals with the Dutch national team

Matthijs de Ligt will have to miss the Nations League finals with the Dutch national team. The 23-year-old defender of Bayern Munich has suffered an injury and is the next key player, following Memphis Depay, to be ruled out.

De Ligt was already absent from training on Sunday after sustaining a calf injury during the practice session on Saturday. It has now been confirmed that the 41-time international will not be available for Wednesday's semifinal against Croatia. Additionally, the final or third-place playoff on Sunday also comes too soon for the center-back.

This is a setback for national team coach Ronald Koeman, who had already missed De Ligt during the start of the Euro qualifiers against France (a 4-0 defeat) due to a stomach virus. De Ligt then made his comeback in the starting lineup against Gibraltar, having previously played for Ajax and Juventus.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has announced that Daley Blind will be added to the squad for the Nations League finals after De Ligt's withdrawal, pending approval from UEFA. The 33-year-old Bayern defender, along with AZ midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, was on the standby list.
