With three former Eredivisie strikers scoring, it was a small Dutch celebration Wednesday night at Rangers FC visiting Dundee FC. Danilo, Sam Lammers, and Cyriel Dessers found the back of the net. The big question is: who will coach Philipp Clement field next time?
Clement opted to start with Danilo up front against Dundee, placing Lammers in the number ten position and bringing Dessers in as a substitute. Both the Brazilian and the Dutchman left the field with a goal and an assist each. However, Dessers only needed fifteen minutes to get on the scoresheet as well.
"The Scottish Sun" headline read, "Dessers and Lammers bring fireworks to Rangers." The two attackers had made a rather underwhelming impression at Rangers until now. "Lammers - yes, Sam Lammers - produced a quite stunning third goal, before Dessers - yes, Cyriel Dessers - added the fourth of the evening," The Sun wrote, with a hint of irony.
Danilo also received compliments. BBC analyst Neil McCann was very enthusiastic about the performance of the former striker from FC Twente, Feyenoord, and Ajax. "He's truly a great find for Rangers. He has shown that he is agile and has pace. And he has a good sense of where to position himself. He could be very successful here, but he still needs to work on his finishing. He could have had five or six tonight."
World-class Lammers
His colleague Michael Stewart was particularly impressed by Lammers' goal. "What a sensational goal that was. That's truly world-class. He acts quickly, has good control, and shoots brilliantly. Even with three goalkeepers in the net, they couldn't have kept it out."
With Lammers in the number ten role, decisions still need to be made regarding the striker position. Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew knows who he would field. "I would least like to play against Danilo myself, without a doubt. He enjoys playing off the shoulder of the defender, making himself elusive. With Dessers, everything seems a bit convoluted and slow. It's as if his ball control isn't quite up to par. So, I would definitely go for Danilo."
