Manchester United suffered their third defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday afternoon. Erik ten Hag's team was beaten 3-1 at their home stadium by Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester City battled to a victory at West Ham United and remains undefeated.
Brighton started brilliantly at Old Trafford, with Jan Paul van Hecke and Joël Veltman in the starting eleven. Twenty minutes into the match, Danny Welbeck hurt his former employers. The striker had been under contract with United for many years and now scored the opening goal for Brighton, making it 0-1.
The hosts struggled considerably, but seemed to level the score shortly before halftime. However, Rasmus Højlund's goal was disallowed because the ball had previously gone out of play.
In the second half, things went completely awry for Ten Hag's troops. Pascal Gross doubled the lead for the Seagulls, and substitute João Pedro added a third goal in the last quarter of the match, making it 0-3. Hannibal Mejbri managed to score a consolation goal for the Red Devils, but it wasn't enough to chase a positive result. With the defeat, United finds themselves in the twelfth position with six points after five matches.
West Ham United - Manchester City 1-3
Manchester City appeared to face a challenging afternoon when visiting West Ham United. Without substitute Nathan Aké, the Citizens fell behind in London. James Ward-Prowse was responsible for the surprising 1-0 in the 36th minute. In the second half, City regained control. Jeremy Doku equalized shortly after halftime. Thanks to Bernardo Silva and goal-machine Erling Haaland, the scoreline ended at 1-3.
