Manager Erik ten Hag will have to manage without Lisandro Martínez at Manchester United for the time being. A foot injury that the Argentine defender suffered in April has now worsened to the point where he needs to rest.
The English record champions announced this on Friday afternoon. The aggravation occurred during the match against Arsenal earlier in October, after which the World Cup winner played the matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich. Now, it has been decided to let the former Ajax player recover and rehabilitate for a while. The further course of action will be assessed by United's medical staff.
The club itself does not provide any information regarding the duration of Martínez's absence. The Athletic and the BBC suggest a recovery period similar to the first time he suffered the injury, which was in April. He was out for three months then, so if it goes in that direction again, his football year in 2023 may already be over.
Ten Hag's immediate concern is the second encounter with Crystal Palace in a week. They had an easy win over the Londoners in the League Cup on Tuesday, and Saturday is about earning three points in the Premier League. In addition to Martínez, United also confirmed that Sergio Reguillón will have to sit out against The Eagles; he has only a minor injury.
