Liverpool has officially confirmed the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai. The Premier League club meets the contractual release clause and transfers seventy million euros to RB Leipzig. Szoboszlai becomes the second summer signing for the Reds, following Alexis Mac Allister.
In announcing the transfer, Liverpool jokingly refers to Elon Musk's decision to limit the number of tweets shown to users per day. "We hope you haven't reached your limit yet today..." tweets the club along with a photo of Szoboszlai holding a flag with the Hungarian tricolor. He will wear the number 8 shirt, which had been vacant since Naby Keïta's free transfer departure to Werder Bremen.
Szoboszlai, a 22-year-old Hungarian midfielder, expresses his delight in joining a "historic top club." "The last three to four days felt like an eternity, it wasn't easy. But now I'm finally here. Liverpool is a club with a great history, good players, and a good manager, everything is right. It was a perfect step."
Szoboszlai excels in the attacking midfield position. In that role, he ultimately scored 20 goals in 91 matches for Leipzig. He still had three seasons remaining on his contract. He joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2021 for 22 million euros.
As the third most expensive signing in Liverpool's history, Szoboszlai will be remembered. The powerhouse has only paid more in the past for Virgil van Dijk (85 million) and Darwin Núñez (80 million).
