Donyell Malen has attracted the interest of both Liverpool and Manchester United, according to English media. The Borussia Dortmund forward needed a long adaptation period at the German top club, but has now become a key player under coach Edin Terzic. However, this could change in the upcoming transfer period, once the Premier League clubs decide to act.
Liverpool is eagerly searching for a new forward. The Reds have a fairly thin frontline, where any injury could potentially cause problems for Jürgen Klopp's team. This is exactly the situation now, as Diogo Jota was injured last weekend against Manchester City (1-1).
Klopp believes that the Portuguese will be out of action for a while: 'Diogo is going to take a bit longer. We don’t know exactly how long, but it's more serious. We will have to look into it.'
In the search for a new forward, Liverpool has thus turned their attention to Malen, who made a transfer from PSV to Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for thirty million euros. Given that the 24-year-old forward regularly counts on a starting spot under Terzic, it seems unlikely that Borussia Dortmund will easily cooperate in a departure for Malen, who, after all, is under contract in Germany until mid-2026. Malen could become the fourth Dutch player in Liverpool's squad, following Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
Not only Liverpool, but also Manchester United is said to have the Dutch international in their sights. United coach Erik ten Hag is explicitly looking for reinforcements on the wings, partly due to the lackluster performances of Antony. The 23-year-old Brazilian joined in the summer of 2022 for a hefty 95 million euros from Ajax, but has so far failed to impress. This season, he has not directly contributed to a goal in 650 minutes, spread over 12 matches. Last season, Antony finished with 10 goals and 5 assists in 47 matches.
