Lyon owner determined in times of crisis: 'There is no risk of relegation'

American John Textor, owner of Olympique Lyon, is trying to quell the crisis at his club with the message that Les Gones will not be relegated from Ligue 1. The fallen giants in France are currently at the bottom of the French league table after their defeat to Clermont.

'The nightmare continues,' writes L'Équipe. 'Lyon takes over the red lantern,' reports Le Monde. After nine games, Lyon has just three points, placing them at the bottom of Ligue 1. Lyon supporters in the Groupama Stadium cynically sang on Sunday evening that their club will be seen in Ligue 2 from next season.

The regional daily Le Progrès wonders where this will end for the champion of France between 2002 and 2008. 'Lyon is heading towards the abyss,' the newspaper writes. Next Sunday, the team of Italian coach Fabio Grosso, who took over from Laurent Blanc earlier this season, will visit Olympique Marseille.

Transfer Window

Lyon owner Textor appeared before the camera at Prime Video after the sixth loss in nine league games (with not a single win). 'We have too much quality in the team to be where we are now. Of course, that worries us. But there is no risk of relegation,' said the American businessman, who is also a shareholder of Crystal Palace, Botafogo, and RWD Molenbeek.

Textor promises reinforcements for Lyon starting in January. 'Financially, we are in a good position, and we are already looking forward to the upcoming transfer window. That's where my responsibility lies, and the team is under the coach. But let's also look at the players we have in-house. In terms of material, we belong to the best teams in Ligue 1.'
