Donyell Malen appears unlikely to be able to assist Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in the Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid. The Dutchman is struggling with knee problems and may have to sit out the return leg at Signal Iduna Park.
As a substitute, Malen made his return for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. A thigh injury had kept the 25-year-old forward sidelined in recent weeks.
This time, it's knee problems. That's according to Ruhr Nachrichten, which knows that besides Malen, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also didn't show up for the final training session.
The English forward at least reported to the team hotel on Tuesday. That wasn't the case for Malen. This seems to indicate that coach Edin Terzic may not be able to rely on the Dutchman on Tuesday. Earlier, it was already announced that Sébastien Haller will also miss the return leg against Atlético. There was some good news, though, as Jadon Sancho appears to have recovered just in time from a stomach bug.
No Memphis
Dortmund needs to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg at Signal Iduna Park to advance to the Champions League semifinals. BVB won't have to deal with Memphis Depay. The Atlético forward is sidelined. If Malen is also absent, then Ian Maatsen will be the only Dutch player on the field.
