Olympique Marseille has bid farewell to Dimitri Payet. The Frenchman is leaving the club after 8.5 years. Payet announced his departure during a press conference.
Payet couldn't control his emotions when he announced his departure. However, it was not his decision. "We have decided not to continue our adventure with our captain," says President Pablo Longaria, addressing Payet. "If I were to describe you in two words, I would say 'genius' and 'talented.' You have brought a lot of joy to our supporters. It's not a farewell, but a see you soon. This is where you belong."
During the past season, Payet had fewer opportunities to play than he would have liked. "I would have liked to continue. I come from a difficult season where I played little and wanted to enjoy myself again. We had a conversation, and the president wanted to be honest. This is not what I expected, but it's best to accept the club's decision. Marseille offered me the option to retire and do something within the club, but I still want to bring joy."
Payet played a total of 326 matches for Marseille, scoring 78 goals and providing 88 assists. The 36-year-old Frenchman has also played for West Ham United, OSC Lille, Saint-Étienne, and Nantes.
