Tonali spent three seasons wearing the Milan shirt, during which he won the Serie A title once. Prior to that, the fourteen-time Italian international played for Brescia in Serie B. According to Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle is paying seventy million euros for the transfer, which could increase further with bonuses. Milan has also secured a 10% sell-on clause.

The highly-priced Tonali signs a contract at St. James' Park until the summer of 2028. With the Magpies, Tonali will compete in the Champions League starting next season. "First and foremost, I would like to thank Newcastle United for giving me this great opportunity in my career. I want to repay the trust of the club's management on the field. As I have done so far, I will give everything I have," he said.

Due to the sky-high transfer fee, Tonali becomes Milan's most expensive outgoing transfer. Furthermore, he is now the most expensive Italian footballer of all time. Last season, the midfielder made 48 appearances in Milan's first team. However, it wasn't enough for the league title as Milan finished the Serie A season in fourth place, securing a spot in the Champions League group stage along with Newcastle.
