Newcastle United shocks with a 0-8 victory in the Premier League

Newcastle United secured their third league victory of the season in a highly impressive manner on Sunday evening. The fourth-placed team from the previous season in the Premier League was far too strong for Sheffield United. Thanks in part to a goal from Sven Botman, Newcastle United won 0-8 against the bottom-placed team. This result equals the biggest-ever victory in league competition and surpasses the club's previous record for the largest away win in its history.

Newcastle United won 0-7 once a few years ago. That was on September 23, 2020, against Morecambe FC in the third round of the EFL Cup. Given the opposition - Morecambe FC currently plays in League Two - that victory was less significant. Sunday evening's victory must have made a much bigger impression. Newcastle United finished fourth in the Premier League last season and is determined to at least replicate that performance.

They made an immediate impact on the first matchday by defeating Aston Villa 5-1 but subsequently suffered defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.

Last week, Newcastle United put an end to their series of losses in the home match against Brentford, gaining confidence for their first Champions League group stage match against AC Milan. The encounter with the Italians ended in a goalless 0-0 draw and was even labeled as 'the worst match ever in the billion-dollar competition.' The visit to Sheffield United will be much more memorable. Sean Longstaff opened the scoring after 21 minutes, and Dan Burn and Botman made it 0-3 at halftime. The Dutchman headed in from a free-kick ten minutes before the halftime whistle.

Eddie Howe's team had no intention of taking their foot off the gas pedal in the second half and continued to hunt for goals. Sheffield United saw every corner of the pitch. Callum Wilson made it 0-4 ten minutes into the second half. Anthony Gordon provided the 0-5, and Miguel Almirón the 0-6. With more than twenty minutes left on the clock at that point, Sheffield United must have feared double digits. However, that didn't happen. Bruno Guimãres and Alexander Isak - formerly of Willem II - set the final score at 0-8.

Eight different goal scorers

Newcastle United created a remarkable statistic against Sheffield United: the eight goals were scored by eight different players. Newcastle United is the first team in the history of the Premier League to achieve this feat. It's the second time the club has won with these numbers in league competition. On September 19, 1999, they defeated Sheffield Wednesday with an 8-0 score.
