PSG boss reprimands Messi: 'A tribute in the stadium was sensitive'

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi believes that Paris Saint-Germain indeed did everything possible to honor Lionel Messi after winning the World Cup with Argentina. The PSG president is responding to statements made by the 36-year-old star forward, who noted earlier this week that he was the only one from the World Cup squad not to be recognized by his club.

It has been known for some time that Messi felt a lack of appreciation in Paris. It was one of the reasons to close the door after two seasons at Parc des Princes and continue his career at Inter Miami. In a YouTube interview this week, the Argentine left-footer looked back on his time at PSG. 'I didn't feel great there, but I did become a world champion during that period.' However, an official tribute was lacking.

Messi added that he could understand this, as France was the opponent in the World Cup final. According to Al-Khelaïfi, that was also the reason there was no tribute in the stadium. 'We honored Messi at training, as everyone saw. And we also celebrated behind the scenes. But we are a French club. It was delicate to celebrate in the stadium. We must also have respect for the country he defeated.'

Mbappé

Nevertheless, in conversations with the French media, Al-Khelaïfi emphasized that PSG is proud that Messi played for the club for two years. However, the PSG chairman hopes that not the Argentine, but Kylian Mbappé, wins the Ballon d'Or this year. 'With him, we have the best player in the world, and in my opinion, he deserves the Ballon d'Or,' says the 49-year-old Qatari. 'Kylian is part of our family, and I am proud of what he and the team are achieving right now.'

These statements are seen by the French media as proof that relations between PSG and Mbappé have been restored after a turbulent summer, during which the 24-year-old forward was persona non grata due to the saga surrounding his contract. Although that contract still expires in 2024, the French star player is now once again an essential part of the team under coach Luis Enrique. On Sunday, Mbappé was injured, but the damage seems to be minimal.
