PSV, finishing as the runner-up in the past Eredivisie season, was one of the four seeded teams in the draw. As a result, they avoided Sporting Braga, Olympique Marseille, and Rangers FC, the team that defeated them in last year's Champions League playoffs under the now-dismissed Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

In the third qualifying round, PSV secured a spot in the last round of the Champions League by defeating AS Monaco in extra time. Now, they must overcome Austrian team Sturm Graz to reach the final qualifying round. Failing to do so would mean that Peter Bosz's team, similar to last season, will continue in the Europa League's main tournament.

PSV's first leg match will be played on Tuesday, August 8, or Wednesday, August 9, with the return leg scheduled for Tuesday, August 15 (the European Super Cup match between Manchester City and Sevilla is slated for Wednesday, August 16). Prior to that, on Friday, August 4, Feyenoord will be the opponent in the battle for the Johan Cruyff Shield.
