Scoring goals for Manchester United: Wayne Rooney knows how to do it. As the all-time leading goal scorer for the powerhouse, he shares his vision on who should be the club's new striker: Harry Kane.

The future of Tottenham Hotspur's goal-getter is one of the main talking points of the transfer summer so far. Rooney would like to see him move to one of the clubs close to his heart, but he also knows that the North London club is typically not a willing partner during negotiations.

"It's as if they're holding him captive," the former top striker jokes. "I thought it was time for him to leave last year, and he stayed. Harry probably feels it too, he knows there are trophies to be won. He has done everything to try that at Tottenham, but now I think it's time for him to look elsewhere, and he seems ready for it too. But we know it, Tottenham can be stubborn," Rooney told The Athletic.

An alternative to Kane, according to Rooney, could be Kylian Mbappé, although the DC United manager himself knows that the French superstar is unlikely to come to Old Trafford. The fact that the biggest stars no longer dock at Manchester United is a reason for many supporters to focus their arrows on the club owners, the Glazer family.

Rooney, as one of the few, publicly defends the Americans. "They have been very successful, but it seems like the fans really want something else now. I'm sure the Glazers will get credit for their work, but there is also the negativity of fans who never seem to see what they have done for the club."
