Chelsea has won an official home match for the first time since March 7th. Mauricio Pochettino's team struggled for a while against the weak promoted side Luton Town, who eventually succumbed 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. With two goals and an assist, Raheem Sterling was the thorn in the side for The Hatters.
Luton, with Tahith Chong in the starting lineup, were inferior from the outset. After fifteen minutes, Enzo Fernández fired a warning shot that rattled the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, Sterling danced through the defense of the promoted team. After several defenders had no chance, the winger found the net: 1-0. The Londoners maintained control against Luton, which posed little to no threat.
The match continued with a monotonous pattern in the second half as well: Chelsea attacked, Luton had nothing to offer, but around the hour mark, they did get a decent opportunity. Ryan Giles tested Robert Sánchez, the Chelsea goalkeeper collected the ball on the rebound. That was the moment for Rob Edwards' team, which displayed a bit more boldness after the break. Sterling scored his second halfway through the second half, assisted by Malo Gusto, who also set up Nicolas Jackson to score his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.
The game then drifted towards its conclusion: this time, David had nothing to challenge Goliath with. Pochettino secured his first three points as Chelsea manager, and he brought Ian Maatsen onto the field for a few minutes. For Luton, and this is no surprise, it will be a long season. Both teams now turn their attention to the League Cup. Chelsea will host AFC Wimbledon midweek, while Luton Town will welcome Gillingham to Kenilworth Road.
