Aleksander Ceferin has warned Saudi Arabia about the 'wrong' transfer strategy the country is currently adopting. According to the UEFA president, Saudi clubs would be better off investing their money elsewhere instead of acquiring European stars.

With the addition of Karim Benzema, Saudi Arabia now has another Ballon d'Or winner in their league, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Ceferin, who was present in the Netherlands for the climax of the Nations League, was asked by NOS about his views on the Saudi developments. 'I primarily think it's a mistake,' he said.

According to Ceferin, Saudi clubs are currently misallocating their funds. 'They should be investing that money in their youth academies, in their coaches, and in the development of their own players. The system of buying players who are nearing the end of their careers is not the system that advances football. The same mistake is being made in China.

Due to its limited overall level, according to Ceferin, the Saudi Arabian league is not attractive enough for players in the prime of their careers. 'Name me one player who is world-class, at a promising age, and chooses to play in Saudi Arabia. It's not about money. Players want to win top leagues, and the major competition is in Europe.
