Micky van de Ven has seamlessly secured a starting spot after his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. On Saturday, the 22-year-old defender will face Virgil van Dijk's Liverpool with Spurs. 'I have the ambition to become one of the best central defenders in the Premier League as well.'
At Spurs, Van de Ven forms a defensive duo with Cristian Romero, whom Lionel Messi considers the best defender in the world. The Dutchman feels a connection with his Argentine colleague.
'I think it developed naturally,' Van de Ven told the BBC. 'We quickly understood each other. Maybe I calm him down and he makes me more aggressive. That complements each other well.'
Van de Ven himself often looks up to Van Dijk, who has been wearing Liverpool's captain's armband since this season. 'I believe Virgil has been the best defender in the Premier League in recent years,' said Van de Ven. 'I have the ambition to become one of the best central defenders in the Premier League as well. I will do everything to achieve that.'
On Saturday, Van de Ven will come face to face with Van Dijk. At 6:30 pm, Liverpool will visit London. 'We will play our own way and not adjust. We are not afraid of Liverpool.'
