Van Gaal's statement caused quite a stir. Mundo Deportivo referred to it as a bombshell, Marca called it a serious accusation, and the Argentine newspaper Olé saw it as a new provocation towards Messi. "It's clear that the wounds have not healed yet," added that outlet on Tuesday.

Van Dijk was aware of this, as he mentioned during an interview with NOS on Tuesday afternoon. "It's his opinion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In this case, I don't share that opinion," stated the 32-year-old Dutch national team captain. Van Dijk also emphasized that the rest of the squad does not agree with Van Gaal's statement.

The comments made by Van Gaal were not discussed within the Dutch national team camp this morning, according to the Liverpool defender. The Netherlands had a meeting ahead of the crucial UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Greece on Thursday and is set to train this afternoon.
