The appointment of Ten Hag as the manager of Manchester United has been disastrous for Maguire. He started in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season but was dropped from the starting eleven after the poor start, averaging only 51 minutes per game played this season: 1593 minutes in 31 official matches. Ten Hag acknowledges the difficulty for Maguire, stating, "But he faces competition from Raphaël Varane, who is fantastic," earlier this week.

"No one would be happy with this situation, and that applies to Harry as well. However, he always trains at a top level, giving one hundred percent effort, so he handles the situation well. In that way, as the team captain, he remains important for the team," emphasized Ten Hag, who did not indicate whether that meant Maguire would stay in the summer. "Let's just say that I'm glad he's here and that he did his job when we needed him. But it's also a decision he will have to make."

Maguire, who is thirty years old, is still officially the most expensive defender of all time. He exchanged Leicester City for Manchester United in the summer of 2019 for a whopping 87 million euros. At the time, the English international surpassed Virgil van Dijk, who left Southampton for Liverpool in 2018 for 84.75 million euros. Wesley Fofana has the potential to become the most expensive defender ever: Chelsea and Leicester City reached an agreement last summer for a total transfer fee of 87.5 million euros if all bonuses are paid.

According to the latest reports, Manchester United hopes to pocket an amount of approximately thirty million euros from any potential transfer. While the club is willing to give Maguire 11.7 million euros, they also save themselves the financial compensation for 2024/25. Several Premier League clubs have shown interest. Former employer Leicester City was one of those clubs, but it is unlikely that the English international will return to the Foxes after their relegation to the Championship.
