On Wednesday evening, the nominees for the Player of the Year award in Africa were announced. Four players with a history in the Eredivisie are competing for the prestigious accolade. They stand alongside stars like Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, and Victor Osimhen.
In total, the African football governing body, CAF, selected thirty players who have a chance at the title. Morocco is the main supplier. A total of seven players from the national team are in contention.
Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain), Azzedine Ounahi (Marseille), Hakim Ziyech (Galatasaray), Sofyan Amrabat (Manchester United), Yahya Jabrane (Wydad Casablanca), Yassine Bounou, and Youssef En-Nesyri (both Sevilla) have made an impression with their performances at the World Cup in Qatar, where Morocco reached the semi-finals.
Apart from Ziyech and Amrabat, there are two more players with a history in the Eredivisie nominated. Ghanaian Mohammed Kudus earned a transfer to West Ham United with his performances at the World Cup and with Ajax, and he is rewarded with a nomination. Former PSV player Ibrahim Sangaré, now playing for Nottingham Forest, is also in the running for the award.
Last year, Senegalese Sadio Mané was named the best player in Africa. He defended his title and beat out Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) and Edouard Mendy (Chelsea).
